Who is Sonja Rykiel?

Sonia Rykiel was a fashion designer who was born and raised in Paris, France. She was the bright mind behind the Poor Boy Sweater which the French magazine 'Elle' featured on its cover. Sonia was known as the 'Queen of Knits' on account of her remarkable knitwear designs. She was also commended for her distinct techniques in creating designs.

Armed with her talent and experience, Sonia Rykiel put up her own label in 1968. That was also the time when her first store was open to the public. She created clothes, fragrances, and accessories and had these items on sale at her own store.

Apart from fashion designing, Rykiel was also fond of writing. She even had a book which was published some time in 1979.

Most of the books Rykiel has written were about fashion, but she was able to author some for children, too. She was given opportunities to write for magazine columns.

With creativity running in her blood, Rykiel was also able to penetrate the music and film industry. She collaborated with Malcolm McLaren on the song entitled 'Who the Hell is Sonia Rykiel?’ Rykiel appeared in the film Prêt-à-Porter in 1994 where she had a cameo role.

In 2012, Rykiel made an announcement that she had Parkinson's disease. Her condition worsened and in August 25, 2016, Sonia Rykiel died.

Among recognitions Sonia Rykiel received when she was alive were Oscar from the Fashion Group International, an award for Design Excellence from Chicago Historical Society's Costume Committee and the latest was her promotion to Grand Officer of the National Order of Merit which took place in 2013.
